Modern Training Aids.

We use modern training aids like Computers, PowerPoint Slide Shows, DVDs Home Theatres, Digital cameras, etc.

Curriculum:

Since 1998 our College has been pioneering the efforts to put a National Curriculum for Tour guides at the national level a project by the Vocational Education & Training Authority - VETA and Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism. This has yet to bear results.

However from our own experience we were able to construct our own curriculum that is comprehensive and geared to the specific needs of the industry and with a lot of contributions from my experience as a Professional Tour guide. It is updated almost every year as needs arises. See attachment. Upon graduation one gets a Certificate. The diploma will enables him to specialize in any field he proves to be good in like, Ornithology, Cultural/Community -Based Tourism, Mountain Climbing, Walking Safaris, Ecology, etc.

Classes:

We have classes from Monday to Friday and the classes starts from 8.00am to 2.00 pm. Thereafter, a students may spend the afternoon in our extensive Library, watching Wildlife Videos, reading books or using our electronic library to construct his Information File.

SKAP & CBET.

We have a "Tuition Till Success" method that enables a student to study until he acquires the necessary graduation standards based on SKAP - Skills, Knowledge, Attitude and Performance.

Our approach is a CBET system meaning Competent Based Education and Training. This takes a student through theory classes to Field trips including Safaris with real tourists and/or foreign research students.

Modular Rolling program.

Our modular rolling program enables one to start as soon as he pays and graduate when he is ready at the same price. (See Fees List).

10 YEARS OF PROTS

We are a reputable college, registered on the 15th September, 1995 and on 15th September, this year we celebrated our 10th anniversary. This means we have collected a lot of materials and accumulated so much experiences, achievements and accomplishments to the benefit of our students. Many graduates have secured important and responsible jobs in reputable tour companies in Arusha and all over Tanzania. The latest example is from a leading company, ConsCorp Africa from South Africa that did interviews a few weeks ago and among the 12 candidates it selected, 10 were from our school. And after the selection course 5 guides remained in the course and all were from PROTS. They will be employed next January, 2006. We consider that a rewarding achievement.

Projects:

Apart from the normal classes at the campus, we have been involved in several national and international training programs a few examples are like:

  • The Cultural Tourism Programme by The Netherlands Development Organization - SNV,
  • Training of Guides & Scouts in Amani Nature Reserve by FINNIDA;
  • Training of Scouts and Guides in West Kilimanjaro - a project by African Wildlife Foundation - AWF.
  • Training Tours & Mountain guides in the Bale Mountains in Ethiopia - a project by GTZ.

The latest is a few weeks ago when Prots's principal did a training of mentors and guides in The Greater St. Lucia Wetland Park, Kwa Zulu Natal – South Africa. A World heritage Site.

Research Facilities.

We accept foreign research students to come and interact or get assisted by our students and use our facilities and information in our electronic library.

Tourist Groups.

We have real tourists groups who interact with our students for the inevitable cultural and field experience.

They go on safari, village & cultural tours, home stays and language and crafts classes.

Some safari programs are as long as 21 days.
