The Friends of the Tanzania Professional Tour Guide School, California, USA.

This is a non-profit making NGO that was established in California, USA, registered under the California Community Foundation, CCF. This initiative has been dedicated to the Diploma Program in the Tour Guiding and leadership at PROTS. Behind this initiative is Tom Seigner, who has been approaching friends and relatives and organizations to raise funds for this program. The money raised, helps to make students study at the school by studying the highest level – the Diploma. “Best Student” is the criteria behind the selection of the students who will benefit from this program. After years of trial, this program has sponsored several students and its remarkable success is displayed in the competent graduates who are now holding responsible positions in leading tour companies. We will put individual records of the students who have passed through this program and what they are doing out there. We will also publish the current progress of the students who are now studying under this program, like details of their projects. We therefore dedicate this page to this program and we will be publishing the continuous progress of this program. We welcome you all to give us support to this program.

1.

PROTS Diploma Current students and their Projects – 2009.

My name is Judith Elitwaza Mndeme, Diploma Student at PROTS.

I would like to express my sincere thank to Mr. Vedasto Izoba my principal, Mr. Victor Bubelwa our tour director, Miss Angel Izoba our Operation manager and Miss Jacqueline Minde our secretary, for granting me with this opportunity of Diploma course of which I’m based on Photographic Commentaries.

1. How can you describe my project?

· I describe my project as something unique to me and those who will go through it.

· I call it live project since it deals with photographic commentaries what actually is happening at certain time.

· Basically, I collect pictures from magazines, postcards, etc. and then go about finding the correct commentaries that corresponds well with that photograph. All the commentaries are based on body form and behavior.

2. What is the most challenging part?

· I have to read a lot to get exactly what will fit into the particular action e.g. cheetah climbing tree and giving explanation on the non-retractile claws made for running.

· Sometimes you have to read more than three different books just to get a great and understandable comment that will be great for a particular commentary.

3.
What is the easiest part and fun?

· This come when I have comment from my favorite lecture which I have already being disrobed by my teacher in the class e.g. Harem – a strategy of a male Impala maintaining many females.

· This will take a little bit of time to comment.

· When I get to do commentary on a lecture that I already did its fun because I know exactly what to write so it’s get easier and gives me strength to keep going and do more commentaries.

4. 4. How much ground have you covered, number of pictures?

· I covered 210 to my target of 350.

5. 5. How relevant is your project? In the tour guiding profession?

· For any one who will come cross of it and read it, this is the pure fact in wildlife and not a story from mouth to tell.

· It’s the project that will make the tourist to have something to remember about when guided by me.

6. 6. What makes you feel special when you do your project?

· By doing this I feel that I’m rich of information and facts about wildlife ecology because I’m studying different books, magazine, watching commentaries and benefit from them.

7. 7. What is your move after this project?

· My next move will be to deal with another Body form and Behavior project, it’s a very interesting thing in my studies.

· I would really like some ideas from the principal and other stuff members on my next move. And also from you guys who are reading this interview. Because getting ideas from different people is good as they say two heads are better than one.

8. 8. Who is the key to person behind your success of this project?

· Mr. Izoba who helped me a lot, he assisted me with getting pictures. He also gave me instructions on how to write and he never got tired of giving me his good advise that kept me going.

· Also my thanks to Mr. Deus, fellow student, for his help in giving me different materials which are very helpful to me during my project.

9. 9. How are you going to use this project to attain graduation standards and job search?

· This will provide at the time of my graduation/job search how competent, accountable, knowledgeable and hard working I am. Something which will convince my employer to hire me without hesitating.

10.After saying all that I would like to advise my fellow students who have not yet started any project to start doing so because by doing so they will learn a lot and get to know more than what we have been taught in class. I will soon post some of my favourite pages in my project on this page. Don’t go away. Also please, any comments are welcome.

PROTS Diploma project – Birds Details.

By Lilian Emmanuael.

1. How can you describe your project?

Well I can say that I’m doing a birds project. I mean I do research on birds trough different sources of birds information. Like I use birds guide books e.g. Birds of Kenya and Northern Tanzania by (DALE A, ZIMMERMAN, DONALD A. TURNER, DAVID J. PEARSON), and many others like Birds of East Africa by Jonathan Scott. The internet, too is a good source.

· I also get more information from our school Laminated Library which is full and rich of information. Thanks to Mr. izoba and Mr. Victor together with the school management who put more effort in preparing and collecting materials.

2. Can you tell us about this Laminated Library?

· Just to invest a lot of money buying a lot of books, DVD’s, magazines and newspapers.

· In our library, you will also get good notes talking about the wilderness in general, and these are prepared by our principal Mr. Izoba, who is also a teacher.

· You will also get good and enough notes about first aid. These are prepared by Mr. Victor, who is also a teacher of first Aid. He has just graduated from the American Wilderness First Responder course! Congratulations, Victor!

· I do use Google search to get more information (Birds Atlas of Tanzania and Kenya);

· Watching DVD’s e.g. Life of Birds by David Attenborough, Winged Migration, e.t.c.

· I would like to talk about my paper work, (I mean the one I use to write the details collected about certain bird e.g. Lily-trotter. My name-sake!

· Now in order to talk/learn about this Jesus bird (tell the meaning of name I should be having 40 items to write down) but here the most interesting points about birds that everyone would like to here.

3. What are the most challenging tasks?

· Reading: you need much concentration in order to read and pick thing, because you don’t write everything. Yet in some guides books information given is not well understood when reading.

· Life span: According to my research that this is very rare because a lot of guide books I have read they don’t talk about it. May be I can say this big birds live longer than small ones for example: Albatrosses may live 40 years or more. This is according to the research.

· Naming: To know names because you find that one species has like three name and you at least have to know them. This helps you in researching you find the name used in this book is different from other books.

3 What is the easiest part and fun?

· I think the easiest part was to get Scientific Names, English names, sizes of female/ male, Habit and Habits.

4.How much ground have you covered and how far are you planning to go?

· For now I have already covered 217 species written and planning to write up to 500 species for this project and I think that will be enough for the project. But because that won’t be the end of my studies about birds. I hope I will do something special and memorable about birds if my plans will succeed. (To have anything written by me e.g. a book)

5.

6. What makes you feel so special doing this project?

· Being among the first three people that began to do this project and the only girl that does this project, for sure that makes me feel so………special!

· From the project that I’m doing together with my plans, I can see a real image of me in years to come. Because now I’m doing a diploma (specializing in birds) I’m good but I real want to be more than good, BEST.

· I like the way the project keeps me busy with the books for more research.

· I don’t like misusing my time, especially whenever I think of my project. In short, I can say my project made me change by knowing and developing more interest of birds into me.

· I use most of the time researching on my own and even discussing with others.

7. What are your future plans.

· My plans are to go for further studies about birds, if I will get that chance. But while working on it I will have to find a job that will earn me some money and I will save some for further studies.

8. Who are behind this success?

· I think a lot of people participated in one way or the other to make this project possible.

· I wish to thank Mr. Vedasto Izoba, my principal, Mr. Victor Bubelwa our tour director, Angel Izoba the Operation Manager, Jacqueline Minde and all the stuff members for their endless help in find materials and paper work, that is without forgetting our great cook Mama Kabila.

· Also my thank to my best friend Joachim, a former student of PROTS, who taught me a lot about birds and even took me to my first bird-watch tour at Kisongo. He even took me to new and different places for bird-watching tours. He also provides me with different sources of birds information.

9. How are you going to use this project for Job Search?

· My project will prove to my employee what I did during my stay at school.

10. If you had to make a wish, what would it be?

· I wish to get a researcher of Birds and work with.
